This challenging climb with stunning views across the Santa Barbara Channel is an epic beast. Gibraltar featured prominently in several editions of the Tour of California with a Category 1 ranking making it one of the toughest in the world for professional road racing. The road itself was conceived of as part of the New Deal and completed by 1936. Overall from the coast, the route climbs from the Santa Barbara Pier, to La Cumbre peak 3997' above sea level.
